Accidents Happen

This weekend Stephen worked in the garage and made more space in there. I’m not sure what exactly he did, but there’s more room for the car. And the kids don’t have to pretend they are rodents, squishing themselves to half their size, to get out on the passenger side of the vehicle.

And after the garage, Stephen went to relocate The Girl’s old bedroom dresser that had randomly been placed by our front door with a different dresser that had been living in the sunroom. I was hoping to sell The Girl’s old dresser, but alas, the dresser didn’t quite make it.

*insert solemn moment of silence to honor the fallen dresser*

In fact, it died a really unsatisfactory death. Stephen might have gotten angry when it fell over, what with all of the drawers flying out all over the floor when he tried to roll it on a dolly.  He might, in a fit of frustration, have flung the drawers out the front door towards the curb.

Possibly.

I hope the neighbors weren’t watching.

It’s moments like these when I really can’t help being a smart ass giving him an encouraging hug. And it’s moments like that that Stephen gives me a death glare and keeps moving really loves me a lot .

A few minutes later, these two stopped to assess:

Dresser

Did you notice the second guy? (Let’s play Where’s Waldo?)

These two dudes took the knobs off of all the drawers. Not sure what they planned on doing with them. But I don’t really care that much either. It was bulk trash pick up week and it looks like they’d scored some mattresses during their earlier hunting expeditions.

When I got home this morning, everything was gone.

  1. I’m interested to read about your plans for downsizing. We used to live in Houston and it seemed that the only way to buy a smaller home was to move to a “downmarket” community. I don’t mean to sound snobbish but we lived in a safe community, near to work and with good schools, but the sq footage of homes was just ridiculously large.
We’ve been living at expats for the last few years and have adjusted to living in smaller sized apartments and houses, and wonder what we’re going to do when we return to Houston!

    • Yeah, it’s going to be a problem. We live in a wonderful neighborhood and love it. We just wish we could have a smaller house in the same location. There aren’t many. The older, smaller square footage homes are being torn down and ginormous McMansions are being built in their place. Like 5-6000 sf. It’s insane. The neighborhoods where there are smaller homes are not necessarily located where I would consider it to be safer. So, yeah. It’s a conundrum. Stephen and I have had lots of discussions about it and we really are stumped. We’re willing to look at condos, townhomes and duplexes, but only if that translates to a financial savings. It makes zero sense to move if it will be more expensive than where we are now. And I don’t want to sell our current house if we won’t be able to buy something smaller, less expensive AND safe. And I’m not interested in moving to the suburbs. I’ll sacrifice a lot for this project and to simplify our lives, but an unsafe neighborhood or the ‘burbs aren’t happening. And I say that not as a diss on suburbs, we just aren’t suburb people. (We tried it once.)

Tell me, tell me...
