The Girl’s Room: Before and After

So, the Girl inherited the packrat gene. And it has been a looooong process with her. But, I’m so incredibly proud of her. Like both of her parents, now when she looks at items, she is conscious of whether she uses it and whether it should be donated or recycled.

Just like everyone else, her room isn’t finished yet. Kristen is currently painting her headboard a bright turquoise color and we need to hang floating shelves and a mirror above her dressing table.

Her room is still a bit cluttered, but: (1) it’s mostly because the shelves haven’t been installed yet (all of her trophies and knick knacks will go there; and (2) we’re still working on it.

Are you ready for the before? Hold on:

TheGirlBefore1

You couldn’t see the floor. At all. Anywhere. Even when we cleaned it up, it would get back to this condition and we’d all be overwhelmed. So. Much. Stuff.

We are all working on A Place For Everything and Everything In Its Place. But it’s a process. And so, we continue.

  1. Very impressive! Gives me hope for my own little girl. She isn’t so much a packrat as she is a “must have everything out all the time” person. She doesn’t like to put things away, but she loves to get EVERYTHING out…all. the. time. It is exhausting for me.

  2. I read “it’s still a bit cluttered” and thought but hey, you can dance in that room! The progress is awesome.

  3. Congrats on all of your progress. With three kids in the house (youngest 4 y/o girl) we seem to be drowning in stuff. I can definitely relate to your before photos!!! Thanks for being so honest.

  4. Holy mother of..!! What a fantastic transformation 🙂

For me, I’m trying to keep my son’s things under control too. Right now all he owns is cloth diapers in two sizes and a little suitcase of clothes to last him until he is the age of 2, with another mini suitcase with baby bottles and so on. Then add on breast pump stuff…

He has no toys yet except for a wooden truck. Too young.

  5. The after looks great! My daughter’s room looks like the before sometimes, but it’s been getting better and better as she gets rid of more and more stuff. Actually, before we started decluttering it looked worse than the before picture. What worked for us was frequent decluttering. As we progress she started seeing for herself how much easier it was to keep clean with less stuff. Now she sometimes declutters on her own without asking me for help.

  6. Excellent! So impressed with the progress you’ve made this year. You deserve a huge pat on the back and should be so proud of yourself and your family. I will miss reading your story.

And btw . . . I think your daughter and my daughter are long lost siblings of some sort. They TOTALLY have the same taste in, well, EVERYTHING I see in these photos! 🙂
