The Liebster Award

Mama Fearse over at The Fearse Family nominated The Simple Year 2 for the Liebster Award. I’m not totally sure what that is, but an award? I’ll take it!

Apparently, as part of the award, I get to answer some questions. So, here we go:

1. Which books are on your bedside table right now?

I’ve taken to reading electronic books on my iPad since they take up zero room and produce zero clutter. But, I still borrow books from the library and have kept favorites in hard copy. Right now I’m reading The Power of Half by Kevin and Hannah Salwen. It’s the true story of a family that sold their house and used half of the proceeds for charitable causes. I can’t tell you much else because I’m still reading, but so far it’s a great book.

2. What is the most sentimental item you own?

This is hard. Because I still have a lot of stuff I’m going through, especially the sentimental variety of clutter. Most of it I’d feel no remorse about taking a picture of then sending it on its way into the world. However, there are a few that I just won’t part with. One of those is a hand crocheted blue and white garter that my great grandmother made for my wedding. I will pass it along to The Girl if and when she chooses to get married. I really should frame it and hang it up.

3. When is the last time you pushed yourself to your physical limits?

I am a die hard fan of Bikram Yoga. My attendance has been spotty in the last year-ish given my back injury, but simply staying in the room for the full 90 minutes is a triumph of body and spirit. I can’t wait to get back to the studio.

4. What amazes you in this world?

The generosity of spirit that so many people show. Even to strangers. On the internet.

5. If you could choose anyone in the world to become your instant house mate, who would it be? (and why?)

I’ve got some pretty amazing housemates right now. But if I could add another, it would be the young woman who watches The Boy and The Girl every summer while I work. She is an extraordinary person and we are blessed to have her in our lives. We consider her a bonus daughter and a member of the family. We miss her every time she goes away to school.

6. What makes you happy?

My family. My friends. Writing. Musical theatre. Bikram Yoga. Fresh pressed juice. An awesome glass of shiraz. Chocolate. Books.

7. What do you wish you could change?

Getting a tattoo in college and being too much of a wuss to finish the laser removal process in my mid-20s. Not only now do I have a tattoo, but I have a faded, splotchy tattoo.

8. If you could go back and observe (fly on the wall style) one day in your life, which day would you choose?

None. I’m very hard on myself and would pick myself apart and overanalyze every move I made or word I said. It’s best to leave it in the past.

9. What principles guide your life?

Love God. Love your neighbor. I’m not always good at it, but I try.

10. Name one item you absolutely could not live without.

Assuming this doesn’t include people, then I’d say my laptop. I can read, look at funny things, write, watch videos, and connect with other people.

A hearty thanks to the Fearse Family for the nomination!

  1. I’d observe the day I got married as long as I could take notes. The officiator had some wonderful words of wisdom and I don’t remember any of them

Tell me, tell me...
